I recently listened to a webinar with Dr. Scott Stoll and Dr. Kim Williams from The Plantrician Project. Someone from the audience ask him to clarify the Importance of this coronary artery calcium scan test. Dr. Kim Williams reminded us again that the test only shows calcified hard plaque, and not the soft dangerous plaque that can result in heart events. The hard plaque is your friend and will never cause a heart event.
If you have a score of zero, you should NOT assume that you are out of the woods. Instead, he says to look at your risk factors below. If you have any of these risk factors AND you have a score of 0 on the test, you ARE at risk for a heart event.
1. If you have an LDL above 160 or ever greater than 190.
2. High triglycerides
3. High blood pressure
4. Diabetes
He encourages all of us to get our risk factors under control, using diet and lifestyle changes.
And , if you are consuming a Whole Food Plant Based Way of eating, there is never any reason to ever repeat the coronary artery calcium scan test. And those people switching to a whole food Plant Based Way of eating will likelysee an increase in their calcified plaque because the soft plaque will be changing to hard plaque.
A better test if you want to check for plaque is to get a coronary CT angiogram.
Thanks to Dr. Scott Stoll and Dr. Kim Williams for this valuable information.
